The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles face off in Super Bowl LVII at 6:30pm ET at State Farm Stadium in Phoenix, AZ and if you are fishing for a prop bet on the big game, BetUS Sportsbook has one of the most little-known (and most creatively named) prop bets in the industry: The Octopus.
"We always offer a variety of proposition wagers throughout the football season, but when it comes to the big game, our menu of betting options exceeds those of any other sporting event in the world,” says BetUS spokesperson, Marcus Johnson.
Although some of the most popular and well-known prop bets are on the coin toss, the color of the Gatorade poured on the winning coach or even how long the National Anthem will take to be sung, there is actually a prop that questions if there will be an octopus during the game.
You heard right, an octopus. And there is a nearly 10% chance (according to BetUS oddsmakers) we’ll see one - with odds on the ‘Yes’ at +1000 (10/1), or a 9.09% implied probability. But we’re not talking about a clever gameday commercial. And no, we are not even talking about an actual marine mollusk from the sea.
If you’re not familiar with what an octopus is, don’t feel bad. The term is rather new and was created in 2019 after MMQB editor, Mitch Goldich, suggested there should be a cool name for a play Torrey Smith made. The answer came from sportswriter Mike Wallace. An octopus is when the same player scores a touchdown and the ensuing two-point conversion. Eight points by one player, get it? Hence Octopus!
“The possibility of there being an octopus in this game is actually quite high, since the last person to score one this season was Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, in week 9,” says Marcus Johnson, a spokesperson at BetUS.com.
The two-point conversion was not adopted by the NFL until 1994 and there have only been 169 two-point conversions recorded since its adoption. “There were only six last season,” Johnson says.
