The 2022 World Series begins tonight in a best-of-7 series as the Philadelphia Phillies take on the host Houston Astros. The Phillies are coming of a dramatic NLCS win over the Padres, while the Astros are fresh off a shocking defeat of the Yankees in the ALCS. The Phillies are looking to win their first World Series title in 14 years and their underdog status is being embraced by fans. Meanwhile the Astros feel like a ruthless machine.
For Game 1, the Astros are a –165 moneyline (outright winner) favorite and the Phillies a +145 underdog at BetUS sportsbook just hours before the first pitch on Friday. The runline is currently posted as Astros –1 ½ (+135 ) and the Phillies +1 ½ (-155). The moneyline odds translate to an implied probability of an Astros win of 62.26% and an implied probability of a Phillies win of 40.82% (implied probability doesn’t add up to 100% due to the bookmakers’ margin).
As of noon eastern time, BetUS reported that 78.14% of bets and 81.94% of the dollar volume bet on the runline for Game 1 had been bet on the Astros, as well as 54.95% of the bets and 51.15% of the total dollar volume bet on the moneyline, or outright winner.
But it is a different story when it comes to the eventual winner of the World Series itself (see odds) – in the same report, BetUS says that 59.63% of bets and 52.34% of the total dollar volume bet on the eventual winner of the World Series has been bet on the underdog Phillies, which are currently paying +150 (meaning a $100 wager results in a payout of $250 - $150 in profit plus the return of the bettor’s $100 stake) if they are crowned the winner of the Series. The Astros, for their part, are –180 favorites to win the Series (a $100 bet would result in a payout of $155.56, or a net profit of just $55.56). Those odds translate to an implied probability of the Astros winning the Series of 64.29%; The Phillies, 40%.
As always, BetUS has one of the widest selections of ‘props’ and alternative betting options available in the sports betting industry. One of the more popular ones is the World Series MVP. Yordan Alvarez of the Astros is the +600 favorite to be the 2022 World Series MVP, with Bryce Harper of the Phillies (+700) and Justin Verlander of the Astros (+800) rounding out the top 3.
